Meet Lewis: The 13-Year-Old Autistic Boy Changing UK Hospitals
When 13-year-old Lewis Wright from Merseyside used to visit hospital, it was overwhelming — the lights, the noise, the chaos. Instead of just struggling through it, Lewis decided to make things better.
Working with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, he created “sensory boxes” filled with calming tools like fidget toys, sunglasses, and ear defenders. These simple items have made hospital visits far less stressful for children with sensory needs.
The impact? Kids are calmer. Parents can actually talk to doctors. And hospitals are becoming more autism-friendly because of one boy’s idea.
In 2024, Lewis won a National Child Hero Award for his project. His mum said she’s “extremely proud” that he turned his own struggles into something that helps others.
💡 His story is a reminder to parents everywhere: our children’s unique ways of seeing the world can lead to extraordinary solutions. With support and belief, they don’t just cope — they can change the system itself.
